ISO 9001 - UK Quality Management in Kent & London

What is ISO 9001?

It is an internationally agreed standard written by ISO (The International Organization for Standardization) which has been adopted by over one million organisations worldwide. The standard describes the key features in any organisation necessary to consistently deliver a quality service and product to its clients' in a changing World.

The 9001 Standard has been updated (September 2015)  from the 2008 to 2015 version and we are now supporting our UK clients with the significant changes that make the standard even more robust and appropriate for organisations of all sizes.

There are about twenty features of a correctly implemented ISO 9001 management system which all well-run organisations should adopt and include:

1)      The organisation has clear understanding of its clients developing needs

2)      Documentary evidence that all staff are competent and trained to deliver a quality service in area where they work.

3)      A complaints system that helps the organisation learn from its mistakes and support continual improvement

Without these and the other basic features the organisation will be less able to produce the consistent and reliable service that its clients require.

Whilst it is not a mandatory part of the ISO 9001 standard, nearly all organisations with ISO 9001 have “certified systems”. This means that the effectiveness of these basic features are inspected by an independent assessor annually. The independence of this assessor is best demonstrated by them being from a UKAS accredited Certification Body.

The independence of this assessment process means many larger clients insist on their suppliers having the annual ISO assessment done by a Certification Body accredited by the UK government backed UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service).

The ISO 9001 standard is upgraded approximately every eight years to reflect the changing  expectations and requirements that all organisations have in delivering a quality service to their clients' and we are anticipating a significant revision to the ISO 9001 standard in 2015.

The 9001 is also the foundation of a wide range of other management standards including ISO 14001 (Environment) and OHSAS 18001 (Health & Safety) and frequently 2SB implement two or more of these standards in a single programme.

Why Implement ISO 9001?

Organisations implement an ISO 9001 certified management system for three main reasons.

Tender Requirements

ISO 9001 certification is often a pre-condition to be able to tender for work from larger clients who need to protect their own reputation through having a more robust supply chain.

Many larger clients also insist that the certification is UKAS accredited.  This means that the effectiveness of the ISO 9001 system is independently assessed by an experienced auditor on an annual basis.

Improving Business Performance

Having an effectively implemented and audited ISO 9001 management system also helps organisations improve their performance through both supporting clear strategic focus and ensuring that the basic features of any well run organisation are maintained.

This is particularly useful in helping business owners delegate key responsibilities to their colleagues and to take on a more strategic role.

Preparing the business to be sold

Potential purchasers will have greater confidence in buying the business if they know that it has a properly implemented and independently checked UKAS accredited ISO 9001 management system.

This is based on the experience of Henry Campbell-Jones Managing Director of Hornblower Business Brokers Ltd. A copy of of his guide providing this and other useful advice on selling a business can be downloaded through the Hornblower website.

The Implementation Process

A typical implementation time frame to certification for a single ISO 9001 management system consists of 6 day visits over approximately 6 months.

2SB will however always adapt our approach to meet our clients’ needs.

We can reduce implementation time frames if the client requires certification urgently and we also manage our visits to best fit with your business operations. This could involve dividing our visits into a series of half days or only visiting the site during your quieter periods.

We will agree an implementation programme with you from the start and will provide all the guidance and resources necessary to achieve certification.

More Than One Standard?

Increasingly 2SB are seeing more businesses request the implementation of combined management systems to cover two or more standards.

Summarised below are typical implementation time frames for management systems covering up to three standards.

Obart Pumps in Maidstone, Kent

2SB worked alongside Obart Pumps to implement a triple standard management system. Motivation for the system was two-fold. The Managing Director wanted certification to officially confirm that Obart was a well-run business capable of working with any organisation. Pressure then also started to mount from their suppliers and customers. Over the course of 8 months 2SB worked to provide Obart Pumps with all the necessary resources required by the business and have left Obart with a truly integrated management system.
