Motivation for implementing FSC®

Having been established for over 40 year, Pelican Fabrications works for shop-fitting and project management companies supplying joinery, retail fixture, shop-fitting and interior design services.

Pelican’s continuous growth over the past years can be attributed to the repeat custom they receive from their valued clients who are aware that Pelican is a quality company committed to providing a reliable service.

Pelican now thrive from their loyal client base whose own customers consist of major blue chip organisations such as John Lewis, Mothercare, Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons.

In May 2013 however, it emerged that one of Pelican’s major clients were under pressure from their own customers to become FSC Chain of Custody certified. In order for their client to achieve this, Pelican as a sub-contractor were also required to gain certification. Pelican were given a date by which their FSC certification had to be official, the alternative was to lose their contract.

Lyn Scown, Manager and Management Representative at Pelican Fabrications, commented on this situation:

“It was requested from us and if we hadn’t gained certification we would have lost this work. It would have been a lot of money lost each year should we have lost this client”

The Certification Process

At a time when costs have had to be cut and the workforce reduced, Lyn initially expressed concern over how time-consuming the certification process would be.  Eric Gardener, Chain of Custody Specialist at 2SB, was however able to offer his services at times that would be most convenient for the company.

Lyn stated:

“As Manager of Pelican Fabrications, I was concerned about the time I would have to spend on gaining this certification. I could not afford to dedicate full working days to the process. Eric understood that this was an important business issue and he managed his visits to suit my schedule”

Over a period of five short visits, Eric was able to implement a scope to meet the demands of Pelicans existing client. Eric also provided and explained all necessary documentation and ensured Pelican’s workforce was informed of the new procedures.

Subsequently on the 26th June 2013, Pelican gained FSC Chain of Custody certification.

Lyn further commented:

“Even though we were only implementing the standard to satisfy an existing client important to our company,  we are now excited to see what new opportunities being FSC® certified will bring to the business”

Why choose 2SB?

2SB recognises that the needs of each individual business are different and we pride ourselves on our ability to tailor our approach to meet these needs. The feedback we frequently receive from our clients confirms to us that our approach adds significant value to the services we provide.

In addition to Eric’s flexibility with regard to the timing of his visits, Lyn also stated that she now felt fully informed on the requirements for FSC® certification and that she was confident the company would maintain their certification into the future:

“I highly doubt that we will need further support from Eric prior to future external audits. I have all the knowledge I need to be able to maintain the practices Eric has implemented and to ensure we remain compliant with the standard”
