UK 2022 Plastic Packaging Tax: What does this mean for you?

The UK government will introduce a new Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) on 1st April 2022. The aim of this tax is to provide a clear economic incentive for business to use recycled plastic.

The government intends this to increase the demand for and use of recycled plastic and stimulate increased levels of recycling collection. In turn, this should divert plastic waste away from landfill and incineration.

Will your business be taxed?

The good news is that this only applies to manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging from 1st April 2022.

Do you need to do anything if you purchase plastic packaging?

Yes – If you are purchasing packing, your supplier invoices should state that they are paying the PPT on what you’ve been supplied. If they don’t, you could be indirectly liable for paying this tax under the “joint and several liability clause” of the Financial Act 2021.

If you are a manufacturer or importer of plastic packaging, check the government’s website for information about the types of products which are exempt from the tax.

PPT and ISO 14001

If you hold certification in ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) or are working towards it, it’s especially important to check whether the PPT applies to you. 2SB can support you in understanding this legislation and adding it to your environmental legal register. Contact us to find out how we can help.
