It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our colleague and friend, Eric Gardener, who passed away on Easter Sunday, 17th April 2022. Eric has been a valued member of the 2SB team since 2010 and will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife Pat and the rest of his family.
Eric start his career as as an estimator at Battley Brothers in Clapham before moving to Alabaster Passmore in Maidstone in the 1970's.
He was always willing to take on additional challenges and spent time as the Night Manager at Passmores before moving in to a commercial role using his extensive practical experience to both optimise commercial performance and provide candid experience as to what could be achieved.
With the demise of Passmores in 1994 he worked for Nuffield Web in Basildon, then Spottiswoode Ballantyne in Colchester before a longer spell at Hendy Banks near Old Street in the City and then Alden Press in Oxford.
Over his final 12 years, working part time, he developed considerable expertise in FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody projects supporting all the sectors that handle woodfibre. During this time he established a strong reputation for his thoughtful, constructive and professional approach and he was still working remotely with clients up until his death.

Eric's funeral is on Thursday 19 May at 11am at the Medway Crematorium Robin Hood Ln, Blue Bell Hill, Chatham, ME5 9QU.

Eric's core skills were that of a print estimator and, in his career, had priced a vast range of print projects from simple greetings cards to national projects valued worth over £1 million. He also worked in a wide range of management positions, including as a night shift production manager, ensuring that the production processes are coordinated to meet the very tight deadlines for the distribution of sequential time sensitive magazines. He also held a number of senior management positions in print businesses and understoods the pressures that all Directors face in leading a business during challenging times.
Eric's key training in recent years had been learning from both clients, FSC Certification Bodies and the changing Chain of Custody Standards to create effective and professional implementation plans.
Eric was very proud of his allotment and, if contacted during a day when not working on a Chain of Custody project, would often be working on his allotment with his former work colleague and long term friend, Alan. He had also been on a number of sailing adventures with Chris.
